ELLE’s first foreign edition was ELLE US, launched monthly in 1985 (in France, the magazine is published every week!) and it was an unqualified hit that forever changed the landscape of American fashion magazines.
ELLE was the first fashion magazine to display any sustained interest in popular culture and the connection where high fashion and the street meet. Fashion was to be integrated into a woman’s daily wardrobe according to her own tastes and comfort level.
Out of that grew ELLE’s unique modern message: Fashion (that which is current) should always be subordinate to Style, the very personal message that a woman sends about herself. Style is about everything, from the way a woman lives, to where she travels, to her taste in music, art, food, cars, and technology.
